Issues in the zone:

  • Traffic congestion at Madhya Kailash Junction is a key issue that affects commuters. Those looking to travel to the airport or southern parts of the city face long hours of commute during peak hours in the area due to traffic jams.
  • Overflowing sewage and old sewage pipes are an issue in Adyar. The old pipes leak sewer water on to the streets and pose a hazard to public health.
  • Velachery sees many areas of OSR land that remain unused that the residents have demanded be used for public welfare by creating common spaces such as parks.
  • Traffic and poor roads are an issue across Velachery, with many arterial roads such as the  Velachery main road and interior areas like Vijayanagar in poor shape. Potholes and erosion of the road during rains affects commuters greatly.
  • Guindy saw large-scale flooding during the recent rains, with poor stormwater network blamed for water stagnation. Roads such as the Five Furlong road had to be pumped clear of water after days of water-logging, causing inconvenience to residents.
  • Guindy to Tambaram stretch sees heavy traffic during peak hours, with efforts to decongest proving futile.
  • Pedestrian pathways in many roads of Kotturpuram are in a state of repair or being encroached. The pathway on Ranjith Road and Gandhi Mandapam Road are poorly maintained and with multiple encroachments forcing pedestrians on to the road.
  • Waste management has been a recurring issue in many areas in the zone. The banks of Adyar river and other water bodies such as. Velachery Lake have been used as a dumping ground.

  1. I was under the impression that 173 had an independent candidate, Meera Ravikumar. I don’t see her name here (or any other independent candidates). I know it’s a long list, but why mention candidates from existing political parties that already have electoral muscle? Seems unnecessary and handicaps independent candidates.
