Issues in the zone

  • Encroachment of water bodies has been a key issue in the zone. Large scale flooding has taken place as a result of such encroachment during the rains of 2021. The Ambattur lake channel has seen construction on it, leading to water stagnation in many parts of the zone. Shrinking water bodies is also a concern, with some large tanks that once held water disappearing over the years.
  • Incomplete works on the stormwater drains has added to residents’ woes in Nolambur and Valsaravakkam. The stormwater drain construction has damaged roads and reduced their width. In addition to this, there is seepage of sewage into the stormwater drain network in some areas.
  • Pattas for residents of Porur has been a long pending demand that has not been addressed, even after the issue came up during the previous round of elections
  • Decongestion of traffic in the zone has not borne fruit as the Port-Maduravoyal expressway has still not materialised.
  • Underground drainage network that has been under construction in Nerkundram has left the roads heavily damaged and dangerous for users. The roads have not been relaid despite many months having passed since they were first dug up for the drain network. The drainage project too has not been completed according to schedule.
