Issues in the zone:

  • Lack of piped drinking water and proper sewage connections is a huge issue in the zone. Residents are forced to buy water from tankers at exorbitant prices. While some apartment complexes have a sewage treatment plant, many use the services of sewage disposal tankers. The issue of water scarcity has not been addressed despite the expansion and growth seen in the zone.
  • Residents of resettlement colonies in Kannagi Nagar and Semmanchery continue to demand better civic amenities. The recent spell of rains led to extreme water-logging in many parts. Residents also do not have proper anganwadi facilities or adequate number of fair price shops. There is increasing burden on the existing infrastructure which has not seen much improvement in many years.

  • Residents along the ECR have registered their opposition to the stormwater drain project, citing that their location and topography does not necessitate the construction of stormwater drains at the cost of thousands of crores. They instead demand that more attention be paid to providing piped water to all localities.
  • Recent weeks have seen protests by residents of Bethel Nagar in Injambakkam against eviction orders. The residents were ordered to leave as part of a reclamation drive of 164 acres of wetlands. The protestors stated that they have been long time residents of the locality and were not aware that they had been sold land that was an encroachment.
