Issues in the zone:

  • Industrial pollution is one of the major issues causing distress in the area; Indiscriminate discharge of industrial waste and effluents has caused health concerns such as respiratory diseases among the residents. Worries about protecting Ennore Creek have risen as a result of poor environmental monitoring. The residents are convinced that the Kattupalli port expansion project will lead to further deterioration of the already reduced marine life and eventually affect the fishing industry drastically.
  • A government hospital with specialities to treat various illnesses and ailments is another need voiced by citizens. Despite the presence of many private hospitals in the area, the lack of a government hospital remains a concern since expensive healthcare is not something that residents can afford.
  • There is scarcity of water in many areas of the northern zone including Wimco Nagar, Ernavoor, Ennore, Kathivakkam, Kaladipet, Ajax, Rajakadai and Thangal, since Metrowater has not laid pipelines here. Further damage is caused since lack of drainage lines results in overflowing sewage water entering wells in the area and making the groundwater dangerous for consumption. Parents have been complaining that drinking water facilities in schools are not maintained.
  • There has been a delay in the opening of Thiruvottiyur Theradi station which has inconvenienced commuters as they have to board from the neighboring stations instead. Inauguration of the station has been repeatedly postponed as CMRS has delayed its clearance. Bus connectivity is a concern expressed by the fishing communities although a new route was introduced recently which connects Thiruvottiyur and Kovalam. They sleep at the docks by arriving the previous day, some sleep on their boats at night to avoid travel in the morning. They say that when the bus terminus was operating from Flower Bazaar it was way more convenient to travel but since it has moved to Koyambedu it has become immensely difficult. A resident has also mentioned that the toilets in the Ernavoor bus stand are not well kept.
  • Waterlogging is an issue in the western region which ends up flooding the area even after a little downpour.
  • Pending projects have become a cause for concern on the Ennore highway linking Thiruvottiyur with Central railway station. There has been no call to action despite residents complaining about the stench and disease spread caused by the massive dump yard mounting in their backyards.
  • After a resettlement building crashed, after repeated complaints from the former slum residents of cracks developing in their houses were ignored for several years, many residents cleared their residences and even chose to sleep on the streets due to fear that they might face a similar fate.
  • The condition of Thiruvottiyur High Road is taking a toll on the safety of travelers. The road is accident-prone since motorists drive rashly and the road is saturated with potholes. Encroachments on both sides of the road pose great risk to commuters traveling in the early hours of the morning and to make it worse, illegal parking and dumping of construction debris on the stretch are responsible for the number of accidents that occur on the stretch.
