Issues in the Zone:

  • In January of 2021, the waste collection in 11 out of 15 zones were handed over to private companies. Zone 8, was one of the zones where a waste collection contract was handed to Ramky Enviro Engineers (a private envrionmetal services company). The company absorbed around a 100 workers, and the rest (who were employed under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission) were terminated from their jobs. Many of the NULM workers who had been working under the GCC for over 10 years were promised permanent employment, but instead they were abruptly laid off. In addition, there has been no compensation provided to those who were laid off.
  • Anna Nagar was one of the worst hit during last year’s rains. For example, residents of the Golden Jublee Apartments (developed by Tamil Nadu Housing Board) in Anna Nagar West were marooned for two days due to floods. Many residents had to vacate to other places in the process. According to a resident, new residential projects around the complex raised the road levels by three feet, preventing the natural flow of water from older residential areas (such as Golden Jublee Apartments) into the Cooum river, causing excess flooding.
  • Excess flooding during rains has also been caused due to overflowing of nearby lakes and marshes. For example, during the rains, water from the Anai Eri (in Pallikarnai) overflowed into streets of Anna Nagar among other areas. Residents have been demanding that a channel be created linking the Eri to Narayanapuram Lake, based on the natural slopes in the land. Existing storm water drains in the area proved ineffective during the week long flooding as they were too small to hold the amount of water coming in. Flooding in the zone has also been caused by water overflowing from Otteri Nullah, parts of the Cooum River, and Virugambakkam-Arumbakkam canal.
  • Repairing of damaged interior roads in areas such as Aminjikarai and Arumbakkam, replacement of old water supply are key demands of voters for this election. Dumping of garbage in the Cooum River has become worse in the last year, with residents demanding strict action from the corporation on the same.
  • According to residents in Shenoy Nagar, ground water levels have also decreased in the area due to felling of trees for the Metro Rail Project.
