Issues in the zone:

  • Residents have been demanding that Metro Water implement sewer connections for houses in areas such as Oragadam, Venkatapuram and  Kallikuppam. Wards 82, 85 and 86 are yet to get underground drain connections.
  • Residents have also pressed for the long overdue widening of Rail Over Bridge at Ambattur OT to reduce traffic congestion, but the construction is yet to happen. This plan was part of a project involving state highways, GCC and Southern Railways; it has been in the talks for more than ten years now.
  • Road cutting charges are very high: Charges range from Rs. 30,000 to 1 Lakh, and many residents are asking for these to be reduced or waived.
  • Garbage collection: Shortage of bins, tricycles, battery operated vehicles and compactor vehicles is leading to garbage collecting in open spaces. For example, garbage collects for days at the intersection of Oori Street and Rathnavel Pandian Road in Mogappair East. There is also no specific place to dump garbage temporarily for conservancy workers, leading to garbage piling up on the road. Workers have also mentioned that they don’t receive safety gear (such as raincoats during the rainy season, gloves, etc).
  • Residents have complained about the illegal parking of mini vans and other vehicles in Mangal Eri Park, Vellalar Street and Ambattur Industrial Estate Main Road. The parking is an inconvenience for pedestrians, many of whom are senior citizens on their morning walks.
  • Residents have also complained about the lack of corporation schools in the zone. In addition, facilities in existing corporation schools are inadequate.
