Issues in the zone:

  • Recent spell of rains left areas under Manapakkam and Mugalivakkam inundated for days. Residents were forced to stay indoors for close to two days as the water-logging did not recede in many parts. A lack of proper stormwater drains coverage across the zone has been cited as the reason for the flooding.
  • Traffic issues are frequent at the MIOT junction in Manapakkam. A grade separator project has been proposed to ease the traffic jams in this area during peak hours. The work is set to be completed by 2024 and open to the public.
  • Subways in the zone have faced frequent inundation, leaving the commuters stranded or in danger during rains. The residents’ long-pending demand is the construction of a rail over bridge at the Thillai Ganga Nagar subway in order to prevent this issue during monsoons. The promise made in 2016 has yet to be fulfilled.
  • Poor roads are also an issue across the zone. Residents of Saraswathi Nagar have been lobbying for better streets for many years. They also demand proper construction of stormwater drains to prevent inundation during the monsoon.
  • Restoration and rejuvenation of Adambakkam lake is a long-pending issue highlighted by residents
  • Encroachment of water bodies along the Adyar river in Nandambakkam is a key issue that has remained unaddressed. The encroachment has resulted in narrowing of the canal carrying water and led to flooding during the recent rains.
  • High property taxes without basic civic amenities are also a source of discontent for the residents.
